President Deni assures on the region’s presidential election timeline

Somalia’s semiautonomous Puntland state President, Said Abdullahi Deni, has pledged that multi-party elections will take place on January 8, 2024, in Puntland, a few days after opposition politicians threatened to hold a unilateral election if Deni fails to conduct a consensus election early next year.

Speaking at the 25th-anniversary event of Puntland in Garowe on Tuesday night, President Deni reaffirmed his commitment to a peaceful and democratic process. He assured that if his party were defeated, they would peacefully hand over regional power to the winner. President Deni expressed his dedication to achieving the people’s goal of a democratic system where citizens can freely choose their leaders.

“I am telling the people of Puntland that we will hold the election on time. The people said Deni did not talk, but today I am speaking to you that I am ready for a party contest on January 8. I promise that if I lose the election, I will hand over the position peacefully, let the country be in peace,” said Deni.

He called for preparations for multi-party competition and emphasized the need to move past previous events and focus on preparing for the elections.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Puntland’s self-called Danab Command declared that the unilateral cease-fire, announced weeks ago, has officially ended. They cited the failure of traditional elders in Puntland to reach decisions on the security situation and the existence of Puntland.

The command also issued a warning, threatening to respond to any action taken by President Said Deni, accusing him of preparing to extend his term.

These developments from the Danab military command came three days after the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission announced the names of eight political organizations officially recognized as political parties for the upcoming regional election.
