President discusses UN chief for lifting armed embargo on Somalia

Somali president H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who is attending Arab league Summit in Algeria had met with United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres and discussed the war against al-Shabaab and how it is important to support the government in this offensive.

According to the statement, the president had shared with the Secretary the latest development of the Somali armed forces in the battlefield, and it’s the time for lifting a long run armed embargo on Somalia to seek help in the fight against the militant.

Somalia has been under armed embargo since the 1990s, and it’s the longest one, in recent years the Somali government has been lobbying to lift this embargo, but by far, that hasn’t happened.

On his side, António Guterres, has applauded the significant achievement gained by the government in the battlefield, and he pledged that the UN will continue its support for the government, building capable army and climate change related issues including drought affected people.
